Getting to Know Alpha Gamma Delta

What is it like being a founding member of the newest addition of UT’s Panhellenic Council?

Many UT students participate in Greek Life, but few can say they are amongst the first member class of a re-established chapter. In the fall of 2024, Alpha Gamma Delta returned to the University of Tennessee, bringing a wave of sisterhood to the university’s extensive Panhellenic sorority community. Although some may have assumed that a new chapter would struggle to find its place on campus, Alpha Gam has made significant strides since its arrival this past semester. The Gamma Nu chapter is just getting started.

Lucie Schaeffer, an Alpha Gamma Delta sister, reflects on her time as a member with praise and excitement for what’s to come. As a member of the founding pledge class, Schaeffer offers a unique perspective on sisterhood and building connections in Greek Life.

“We have an amazing sisterhood,” Schaeffer said. “Since we’re still new, we have the unique ability to know every girl in our chapter, and it’s amazing. It’s a warm and inviting sisterhood to be a part of.”

The chapter offers more than just a chance to make lifelong friendships—it also provides committee and executive positions for those looking to become more involved. Schaeffer explained that there are many avenues to make an impact within the chapter.

“There are lots of leadership opportunities,” Schaeffer said. “I was selected for an amazing opportunity through Alpha Gam’s Empower organization. I meet once a month with girls across the U.S. and Canada, and we discuss the modules we’ve worked through. At the end of the school year, we attend the Empower Camp and spend the weekend with our sisters.”

In addition to fostering campus connections, Alpha Gam allows members to network with sisters on both national and international levels—a remarkable achievement for a new chapter.

Looking ahead, Alpha Gam plans to expand its campus reach and support its philanthropy, Fighting Hunger. This February, members will participate in a week of service throughout Knoxville, highlighted by a Valentine’s candy-gram table on UT’s Ped Walkway. This event will be the first of many successful philanthropy endeavors for the chapter.

Recently, Alpha Gamma Delta has closed its COB efforts, completing this Spring recruitment process with four events aimed at immersing potential new members in all things Alpha Gam.

Alpha Gamma Delta proudly displays its signature red, buff, and green across campus, with chapter members eager to embark on the exciting journey ahead. Together, they are ready to make a lasting impact by fostering sisterhood, leadership and service as the chapter grows.
